Do What Others Won't And Get Results Others Don't!
Thank you for tuning in. If you’re not taking any notes, please don’t be afraid to come back and replay any part of this episode to get those meaningful thoughts and suggestions back into your day and/or vision as you see fit about the topic. What is the name of the topic? What’s the full title? The full title is Do What Others Won’t and Get Results Others Don’t. How does that ring? Does that resonate? I’m going to use that word again, resonate, because this is all about training our brain, and our body will follow. Think about it. Do what others won’t and get results others don’t.
The topic is applicable to everything we set out to achieve. What does achieve mean to you? Is it just completing a general task, or is it reaching that bold goal? At DCS Strategies, we talk about bold goals. That’s what it’s all about. What is a bold goal, as a reminder? They are those growth goals that force us to step out of that old comfort zone. You've got to step out of it.
As they say, typically, the closer you get to the edge of your comfort zone, the more you’re achieving and growing. That’s exactly right. Comfort zones are not built for us to grow in. Remember, if we stay in our comfort zone, we’re just going to do what others do. This whole topic is to do what others won’t and get results others don’t. For the sake of this growth conversation, let’s stay with all the encompassing description of achieving that we talked about upfront, so we can remind ourselves along the way. Achieve or achievements. It’s not a general task. It’s a bold goal.
Defining The Core Philosophy
Before I discuss the topic, let me share with you the phrase that best defines our work at DCB Strategies, which captures the result set of achieving bold goals that are backed by purpose, prepared strategies, and actions. Whether your bold goals are within your professional, personal, or athletic setting, this phrase will resonate. Are you ready for the phrase? Here is that phrase. Being the best and average have nothing in common.
That’s right. At DCB Strategies, we practice that in everything we do. Say that and repeat it to yourself one time. How does that resonate with you? Doesn’t your brain want to draw a line in the middle of the sand and say, “Am I being the best, or am I being average?” We’re not here to judge. We’re here to give you the tools that are proven for how to best get achievements in their pockets.
The second part of that phrase, nothing in common, is what we are talking about in this episode. Achieving goals that seem impossible to others necessitates doing what others won’t. Thus, nothing in common. You have nothing in common with the others. Do what others won’t and get results others don’t. They have nothing in common with the best.
You have nothing in common with the others. Do what others won’t, and get results others don’t.
This segment is for anyone who is excited to achieve a desired goal. Time out. I said the magic word. Excited. If you’re excited about achieving a goal, you’re halfway there. Believe me. Have you ever met anybody who’s excited who saw barriers or witnessed barriers in front of them to achieve their goals? No. It does take some sense of emotion to get excited.
We call it focus at DCB Strategies. If you have focus, you’re exercising emotion, and emotion gets stimulated to be excited. All of a sudden, barriers break away. They disintegrate in front of you. Some people call them obstacles. We call them obstacle illusions. The segment is for those who want to achieve their desired goals, and they’re excited about doing that.
Let’s face it. In today’s atmosphere, we have multiple real-life and social distractions that can easily keep us from separating from the pack. Thus, the Others Won’t mentality. We want to make sure we separate ourselves from the pack. Do what others won’t, so we get results that others don’t. At times, it’s very hard to do that with today’s distractions and social atmosphere.
It’s interesting to observe over the years the teams and individuals that I’ve had the privilege to witness and work with in person and from afar. One thing was very apparent. It was a common thread. The best in their space in their class were never too proud to recognize the need for adjustments in their bold strategies and actions. It was obvious that they ran their business units with the saying, “Don’t make excuses. Make adjustments.” That can be intimidating for the average person, but remember, the best do what the average won’t.
The Five Daily Success Actions
By learning from the best, I have become a believer over the years and decades in developing and using a set of success tools. I have a toolbox. The clients we have at DCB Strategies have toolboxes for their daily actions to ensure the achievement of their goal grows. Keep that in mind. It’s a toolbox. This isn’t about motivation. This is about developing that toolbox that you go to. Check the box if you’re using the tool so you can best take the next step to achieve your goals.
By now, you must be saying, “What are those success tools relative to do what others won’t and get results others don’t?” Do you have a pen and paper out? If not, here we go. We can always come back. The following five actions are the success tools that, if committed to and practiced daily, will secure your journey to achieving your desired goals. It will. They do. It has been proven.
#1: Act Like A Winner
Let me share with you those five actions that reconfirm the topic of doing what others won’t and getting results that others don’t. The number one action is to act like a winner. It’s easy to say, but how do you do that? We adopt a growth mindset and the behavior of a winner even before achieving success because it initiates the growth. If you don’t act like a winner, you won’t take steps to initiate your growth. If you act like the average, it’s hard to get out of your comfort zone. Winners step out of their comfort zone. They jump out of their comfort zones, thus acting like a winner.

Acting like a winner involves three things. Give it your best every time, always learn and improve, and never let the fear of mistakes stop you. Let’s review that a bit. Acting like a winner involves three things. Give it your best every time, always learn and improve, and do not let the fear of mistakes stop you. For example, review your growth actions of the day and write down your answers the first few times you build this into your habit set.
Here are the questions you need to ask yourself. Write down the answers. “Am I acting like a winner? Was it my best? Did I give it my best? Yes, no, or maybe so? Did I learn? Can I improve today? Was I fearful of anything during this day? Why?” This is all about preparing yourself to act like a winner. If you don’t, you prepare to make sure you adjust, not make excuses.
Many have the will to win, but if you have the will to prepare to win, that’s what this is all about. Act like a winner. Identify those three questions. Write down the answers until it becomes a habit. You, all of a sudden, develop the 1st step of these 5 actions to make you very solidified in the journey of doing what others won’t to get results others don’t.
#2: Embrace Discomfort
Number two step is to embrace discomfort. That’s right. I said it. Embrace discomfort. Successful individuals often step outside their comfort zones and persist longer than others. Understanding that significant progress always requires more effort. We said two magical words that DCB Strategies talks a lot about, which are persistence and effort.
In the example of embracing discomfort, ask yourself this. “Did I take that step or two outside of my comfort zone today?” Write them down. “When distracted, did I persist with more effort?” At DCB Strategies, we believe that effort is free. It’s a matter of going into your pocket, getting it, and exercising it. Number one, act like a winner. Number two, embrace discomfort.
#3: Make Sacrifices
Number 3 action of the 5 is to make sacrifices. Achieving extraordinary results often requires a willingness to forgo any kind of immediate gratification or comfort, which is a sacrifice many are unwilling to make. Thus, do what others won’t, get results others don’t. Make sacrifices. It seems logical to make a sacrifice, but are they meaningful?
Achieving extraordinary results often requires a willingness to forgo immediate gratification or comfort— a sacrifice many are unwilling to make.
“What rational sacrifice or sacrifices did I make today to grow forward?” That’s the question you ask. “Did I get up early to prepare for my appointments and presentations?” I mean early, at 4:00, before you get on the road. “Did I get up early to work out or get my exercise before I start my day? Do I have a clear mindset with great energy?
“Did I forgo a party atmosphere the night before so I could be ready for tomorrow’s actions?” It’s a sacrifice. It could also be, “Did I take a simple step that a lot of people don’t?” It’s not a sacrifice per se, but it may take up some of your time that’s well worth the opportunity. It is, “Did I thank all of the gatekeepers and staff that I ran into today or talked to today for their dedication to what they do? Did I do that?” Those are some examples of what rational sacrifices are all about.
Number one, act like a winner. We always say at DCB Strategies, “Chin up, shoulders back.” Number two, embrace discomfort. Get out of your comfort zone and be very excited about it. Number three, make sacrifices. You know you’re going to do that. It seems pretty logical. If you do those three things, you’re on your way to doing what others won’t and getting results others don’t.
#4: Take Unconventional Paths
Number four action is to take unconventional paths. Instead of following what the crowd does, and you know they don’t make statues of crowds, you must be willing to take a different, less traveled road to achieve different results. Take unconventional paths as number four. Instead of following the crowd, you must be willing to take a different or less-traveled road to achieve different results. For example, “How did I stand out from the rest today in my actions to be my best today?”

Another way to summarize it and hone in on the result is, “How am I being memorable? Did I put a PS at the end of every one of my emails that is memorable, thus compliant-approved? Do I ask open-ended questions? Am I being more interested in my clients and prospects than me being interesting to them? Did I work with the mentality of, ‘I want to educate,’ thus feel the need to obligate?”
Those are some simple examples of the unconventional paths because the others don’t write a memorable PS or ask open-ended questions. They get more trust involved in the conversations. Thus, get a better, linear progression towards a potential close or a solution to be a progressive business partner with the person you’re chatting with.
The others don’t master their craft to work with the educate-to-obligate mentality. Let’s face it. If you educate your prospects and/or clients in a very comfortable way, they’re obligated to listen to what you have to say. It’s not like you’re telling them what to do. You’re sharing with them ideas of something they’re interested in doing. That’s part of the open-ended question answers that you get. It’s an unconventional path. There are more in those examples. Being more unconventional allows you to be more professional, believe it or not, in this craft of sales.
#5: Commit To The Effort
Number one, act like a winner. Number two, embrace discomfort. Number three, make sacrifices. Number four, take unconventional paths. Number five, and this is big, commit to the effort required instead of relying on luck or talent. Success is often a result of consistent, determined effort, specifically the willingness to do the hard work that others won’t. Do I need to say more? Commit to the effort. There’s going to be effort required.
There’s going to be effort in thought, in trying to create unconventional paths, in making sacrifices, in embracing the discomfort of getting out of your comfort zone, and in acting like a winner. You may not want to, as it may not be part of your upbringing, but that was yesterday. Yesterday doesn’t bring tomorrow’s results. Today brings tomorrow’s results. We learn from yesterday, and we prepare today to change tomorrow.
There’s a great saying about this personal challenge that people walk into when they say, “I was never designed to give a lot of effort.” That’s a challenge. I say to people, “Take the word challenge and write it on a piece of paper. In the word challenge, you’ll see the word change. Change the way you think, and you’ll change the way you act.”
Let’s give an example of committing to effort, which is number five. This brings it all together. This is what you say to yourself, “I know effort is for free. Did I activate more effort as required throughout my day? Did I make one more call than I needed to? Did I have one more ask than I needed to? Did I do one more set in my exercises, or did I shy away from that extra calorie-adding dessert? Did I write one more? Thank You note to people that matter in the meetings I’ve had?” Those are some examples of committing to effort. Some people say extra effort. Guess what? If you do extra effort, you become extraordinary.
If you put in extra effort, you become extraordinary.
It seems simple. It takes a boatload of determination to go through the above actions. Thus, making no excuses. Think about this for a moment. You get this habit of practicing these five actions. Act like a winner, embrace discomfort, make sacrifices, take unconventional paths, and commit to effort. All of a sudden, you go through the above actions with no excuses. You execute and adjust along the way to commit to that.
A Team Transforms Through Shared Commitment
This is a great example. We’ll then close it up. A discussion with the leadership team brought this topic to light. They were one month into their bold strategy with eight external wholesalers, with a timetable of achieving their team goal in the three-month period. I got involved after their first month. In the first month, their team was quite fragmented in results and the ways they went after their goals.
This was very frustrating to the team leadership. This was not the fault of the leadership team itself and their initial excitement of potentially achieving their team goal, but they forgot a very important part that we practice at DCB strategies. If you have a team, everyone should wear the same jersey, which will require all to execute their actions accordingly.
After a couple of discussions with the leadership team about having all members commit to the motto of the following, “Do what others won’t and get the results others don’t,” and commit to the five daily actions, results immediately headed in the right direction. We restarted a three-month timetable. This took effort by all. Can you imagine the momentum that it created when successes were being witnessed and shared with others during this timeframe initially? It was contagious, and they far exceeded their bold goal as a team three months later.
It was not simple. The actions are simply described, and then the follow-up needs to be worked through, as we talked about earlier with the examples that apply to their daily actions to achieve their goals. The beauty of these five actions or success tools is that no matter if in a boardroom setting, athletic setting, personal fitness setting, or family dynamic setting, they work, and they’re bulletproof.
This has been a very exciting and passionate discussion. Brief and to the point. We have a bold statement. “Do what others won’t and get results others don’t.” You have five actions to accomplish this, which you could memorize in your daily spirit and habit set of being successful. If you need a postscript to write these down, email Podcast@DCBStrategies.com. We’ll take care of that and get that through to you.

Let’s close up. This can get back to your daily achievements. Remember the phrase, “Do what others won’t and get results that others don’t,” and the five actions when you get off-course. You’ll know when you get off-course. Your heart doesn’t lie. Your integrity doesn’t shame itself. You’ll know. I’m excited. I don’t want to end this. I want to keep on talking, but you have a day to continue and achieve your goals. Make sure that you close up with a great day. Make sure that you prepare yourself today for tomorrow’s success.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about doing what others won’t and getting results others don’t. This is the way you make a difference. Thank you. Stay healthy, and stay passionate. Always give it your best every day. Act like a winner. Embrace discomfort. Make sacrifices. Take on conventional paths, and commit to the effort. That is for free. Have a great day. Thank you.
