What separates the best from the rest? More often than not, it comes down to priorities. High performers consistently focus on a small set of priorities that shape their decisions,
habits, and results. Today, host Darren CdeBaca explores a simple but powerful framework you can use as a daily checklist for growth. The truth is clear: to change our lives, we must change our priorities. When you align your actions with the priorities that drive success—like health, clarity of direction, continuous learning, and disciplined scheduling—you begin to separate yourself from the average. If you’re ready to pursue bold goals and build a true growth mindset, these eight priorities offer a practical roadmap to becoming your best.

The 8 Priorities The Best Have In Common
Introduction & Importance Of Priorities
This episode’s topic, the eight priorities the best have in common. That sounds pretty cool. Can you imagine memorizing these eight or at least having them printed up next to you and having a checklist to see how you’re accommodating these eight priorities the best have in common? I know you tuned in for one reason, to figure out what the best are doing so that we can obviously put those elements into our daily practice and separate ourselves from the rest.
Our topic, the eight priorities the best have in common is undeniably the most common and dependable engine for growth because of the following truism, to change our lives, we must change our priorities. Isn’t that so true? It’s so valid. I don’t think any one of us reading would disagree with that. We clearly are what we do. We clearly are what we think.
I’m confident you intuitively agree that change requires also getting out of our comfort zones, which in itself translates into our steps for real growth. Are you willing to get out of your comfort zone a little bit and listen to hear more about the priorities the best have in common? In fact, it’s interesting as I was looking at obviously putting this together, and the reason why is because I’ve already done this type of program before in the past, but not a show. I put it in one of the DCB UpLift one-pagers, that’s on the website of DCB Strategies. It’s called "Set and Organize Your Priorities".
In there, on the second half of that one-page UpLift, describes the eight priorities the best have in common. It’s interesting in that piece, I do list these priorities very boldly. It’s not surprising that since then, DCB Strategy clients have been and are always bringing up the topic of, “Well, what are my priorities? I’ve got to make this a priority, this goal a priority, this action step, the decide to commit a priority.”
We always have ongoing discussions about priorities. Having these ongoing discussions that have been happening on this topic, I wanted to revisit it and just take that segment of those eight priorities that the best have in common and go over those, so you can write those down and assimilate them into your day and go forward with those eight priorities. Let’s just put things in place. These are tools. These are tools of which I’m sure you will agree upon after hearing them, it was worth the time and worth being reminded about.
Before I start, let me share with you the phrase that defines our work at DCB Strategies, which always captures the results of achieving bold goals with the plan of accountability and purpose. You can’t achieve bold goals without a plan of accountability and purpose. Whether you’re on the professional side, the personal side, athletic side, etc., you know and you’ve felt it. You get a sense that being the best and average have nothing in common. That’s the phrase that defines our work at DCB Strategies.
Do me a favor. As I always say in all my episodes, say and repeat that phrase to yourself once, "Being the best and average have nothing in common." How does that resonate? Again, we’re not here to judge, but I assure you if you say that to yourself, you ask yourself, “Am I amongst the best or amongst the average?” It’s just drawing a line in the sand to see what effort we need to put in place to get to that other side if we feel as though we’re doing average things and we want to start doing best. That’s going to require some effort to cross the line.
I’m sure that after you digest this episode’s segment, which is again titled The Eight Priorities the Best Have in Common, you will get the a-ha of why the best and average have nothing in common. Again, this segment is for anyone who is very, very ready to commit or indulge themselves into their growth journey, which as we know is the best journey we can take for ourselves anytime because when we’re growing, good things happen. We have a growth mindset, an open mindset. We have a purpose. We talk to ourselves differently in a growth way. We have strategies, actions, we have persistence. We also have an ability to see fulfillment occur, which brings success from successes, which allows us to get contagious about taking that energy and rinse and evolve.
When we take a look at these growth journeys here at DCB Strategies, it implies we are setting ourselves up for a bold goal. Not just a goal of getting up in the day and starting your day and going forward, which is a routine. We are thinking about bold goals, again, those that take you out of your comfort zone and do something very bold for yourself or those around you in your professional, personal life, etc.
Let’s get into these eight priorities that the best have in common. Again, if you’re able to write these down, it’d be perfect. If you’re not, again go to DCB Strategies' website and look up DCB UpLifts and bring up the one called "Set and Organize Your Priorities", where you will see these eight listed on the second half of that page.
Let’s get into these priorities. Number one, our health is the first priority. Number two, and I’m going to go over these, provide for our family. Number three, clarity of direction. Number four, practice self-confidence and mental growth. Number five, have an active precision-based business model, if this has to do with your business, or even a personal model of achieving something. Next, research and adopt educational uplifts. Yes, we’ll talk more about that. Number seven, designate, dedicate, and elevate a golden rule at DCB Strategies. Number eight, schedule our priorities.
Okay, so let's get into it and decide to reshape these and define them a little bit better for you so you can activate them starting now, on your growth journey. Number one priority, our health. That includes mindfulness, that’s a positive mindset, that’s calming, that’s fresh, energetic. You have a great diet so you stay internally healthy, and you have an exercise pattern that brings oxygen throughout your muscles and your brain. Mindfulness, diet, and exercise. The three elements to health because you can then say, “I am healthy, therefore, I am equipped to care for my other must-have priorities with a high level of energy.”
Mindfulness, diet, and exercise are the three elements of health.
Good energy from a human body is a result of great mindfulness, great health great diet and great exercise, which is good health. It's tough to have great energy with bad health as we all know. We have ups and downs with our health and our energy isn't as high. I think all of you can agree with number one, our health is our first priority. It’s also a priority the best have in common.
Priority #2 – Provide For Family Or Self
Number two, provide for our families. Whether you have a family or not, if you’re by yourself, great, provide for yourself and you can replace "family" for "yourself" in this statement. My family is my purpose, or I am my purpose, if you’re by yourself and single but if you have a family, my family is my purpose. Purposes are strong. You can walk, you can run through a wall lack of a better term because of purposes like that. Number two priority that the best have in common is they provide for their family by saying, “I am dedicated to allowing my family to enjoy the many benefits of life and growth.”
Priority #3 – Clarity Of Direction
Again, you’re providing for them. The number two priority that the best have in common. Number one, my health. Number two, provide for our family or for my family. Number three, have a clarity of direction. A front window of your car if it’s dirty, you can’t see where you’re going. Clean the window and have clarity in your direction. I have clarity of my goals. Your direction are your goals. Have clarity, understand them. It could be monthly, quarterly, it could be weekly, it could be daily. Those are just general goals. Bold goals you’ll have very large clarity because you’re only going to have 1 or 2 a month, or 1 or 2 a quarter.
Number three, clarity of direction. It could be well stated by saying, “I define, list, and continually activate my strategies and actions supporting my personal and professional goals.” Let me repeat that. Clarity of direction, I define, list, and continually activate my strategies and actions with again backup strategies and supporting my personal and professional goals. Therefore, you do have clarity in your direction.
Priority #4 – Self-Confidence & Mental Growth
Number four in the priority that the best have in common, practicing self-confidence and mental growth. That’s a lot there. Let me give you a one-liner that’ll help you at that in a hurry. Change is required when challenges appear. As we have challenges in our day, whether it’s physical, mental, material, clients, personal, etc., change is required to get through that. That is mental growth. If you have that in your mind and you practice that, your self-confidence will skyrocket relative to meeting challenges when they appear.

Not that we walk around looking for challenges, but days or weeks are filled and can be with challenges. Small or large. Change your mindset, change the way you think, and therefore you’ll change the way you act. Remember, our brain trains our body. Practice your self-confidence and you will have mental growth. You may want to share this with yourself, “I adopt practices that strengthen my confidence and mindset.”
At DCB Strategies, we just have a very few amount of practices that strengthen your confidence and mindset, but they work. It’s the way we talk to ourselves positive self-talk. The person you listen to during the day, the person you talk to the most during the day, is you. Therefore, you listen to yourself the most during the day. Therefore, talk to yourself very well. When it comes to meeting a challenge or you’re uncomfortable, again, change is required. Practice this mental growth and you will develop self-confidence. It’s a "chin up, shoulders back" mentality. If you have that, you’re unstoppable.
Priority #5 – Active Precision-Based Business Model
Let’s review those four priorities of the eight. Number one, my health. Number two, provide for my family or myself. Number three, clarity of direction. Number four, practice self-confidence and mental growth by just that phrase, "change is required when challenges appear." Let’s get into the fifth priority that the best have in common. The best have active precision-based business models when it comes to businesses, when they’re achieving bold goals in their businesses.
Basically, the comment is on this priority is, “I am focused.” I am focused. I update and control the units of my business relative to their importance for achieving my business goals. If you don’t have a precision-based business model in the way you sell, the way you manage a team, the way you manage your franchise, the way you manage your personal growth, thus a personal model the way you manage your health, active precision model, business model. Call it a business model. It’s our business. Personal or professional. Again, having an active and precision-based business model, which means you are focused and you’re updated and control the units of your business relative to their importance in achieving your business goals.
Priority #6 – Research & Adopt Educational Uplifts
Number six in the priorities the best have in common, the best are always researching and they adopt educational uplifts. They’re bettering themselves. We are bettering ourselves if we are amongst the best. Daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. You can better yourself in mindfulness, learning, diet, exercise, etc., but again, majority of it is educational. There’s always room to learn. When you’re willing to learn, you’re willing to share. When you’re willing to share, your energy is high, and when your energy is high you’re focused, etc., it builds on itself.
Number six, research and adopt educational uplifts. Be your best by saying, “I am always learning and educating myself about my space, my craft, and my bold memorable difference.” Think about that. I am always learning and educating myself about my space, that’s your industry, my craft and what you do in that industry, sales, technology, development, etc. and my bold memorable difference. How do I leave a difference in my work, with my prospects, my clients? Always learning how to adopt uplifts along the way. Research and adopt educational uplifts. Never stop learning.
Priority #7 – Designate, Dedicate & Elevate
The seventh priority the best have in common. This is one of my favorites. It can be taken for granted, but it sure speaks volumes. Designate, dedicate, and elevate. It basically says, “I am in growth mode.” I earn the right, which is designated, I dedicate myself to my role so I can become amongst the best, I dedicate and I elevate my role in the eyes of my audience or my audience could be my family, my friends, my acquaintances, or professional.

If you’re designated to do something by licensing or by promotion or by a title, you’re designated. Now it’s time to dedicate yourself to that. Become, learn, embrace information to become dedicated like no other in that role. When you do that, you have the intuitive ability to elevate yourself at any point in time amongst your audience in your role. Elevating in a good way that allows you to have a growth mode in play.
Priority #8 – Schedule Your Priorities
The eighth priority the best have in common. Again, these are in no particular order, but I would sure want to make sure I’m healthy. If you put these in this order, it sure makes sense because it’s tough to schedule your priorities when you don’t have an actively precise business model or you don’t have a clarity of direction, etc. These eight fall in line, they build on each other. The eighth priority, schedule my priorities versus prioritize my schedule. Big difference.
People can fill their schedule with things to do but not things to grow. The commentary there is, “I organize items by degrees of importance relative to my goals, strategies, actions, and activate in my daily calendar accordingly.” Schedule my priorities. Let me summarize this real quickly, the eight priorities the best have in common just by title and with a sub-line. Number one, my health, which includes mindfulness, diet, and exercise. Number two, provide for my family or myself my family or myself is my purpose, provides purpose.
Number three, clarity of direction I have clarity in my goals. Number four, practice self-confidence and mental growth, which means change is required when challenges appear. Number five, I have an active precision-based business model. I am focused. Number six, I research and adopt educational uplifts constantly to be my best. Number seven, I am designated, I am dedicated, and I am ready to elevate. I’m in a growth mode. Number eight, because of all the other seven, I can now schedule my priorities versus prioritize my schedule.
Thus, now we can agree and you knew this from the beginning to change our life or lives, we must change our priorities. These are the eight priorities I don’t think any of you would disagree with to become amongst the best and at the top of your space, industry, craft, etc. Hopefully, you enjoyed that and you decide that you’re ready for this bold growth journey. Before you start, do review these again and again, these eight, and restate to yourself how you will adopt and are adopting and practicing these eight priorities.
To change our lives, we must change our priorities.
If you’re not, you’ll find the next commentary very true because interestingly, the DCB clients who miss a beat with their Decide, Commit, Become growth progression along the way, we can always go back and attribute it to one of these eight priorities that they did not keep in place. Let’s just take the eighth one. Either they didn’t schedule their priorities in their active time blocks, or they didn’t have self-confidence and their mental growth they got fooled by obstacle illusions or they did not have clarity in their goals, they didn’t define them.
They did not have a precision-based business model, they therefore weren’t focused or they didn’t update, upgrade themselves constantly by researching and adopting educational uplifts or they didn’t have a strong enough purpose for themselves or the purpose being themselves or their family. Clearly, they just let their health go and they weren’t energized to have a great open mindset and provide a focus that’s necessary. It’s very important that if you really want to become amongst the best in your craft, get these priorities straight because the eight do.
Okay, let’s close this up so you can get back to your current bold goals and your daily achievements. I appreciate your time in this. This was somewhat low-key but they have these eight priorities are really high-level, high-listening and engagement value. I appreciate your time and thank you for taking time to hear and learn about this vital engine for our growth journeys. Remember, this is what separates the best from the rest. As I always say here at DCB Strategies, stay healthy, stay passionate. You’re in control of your goals. It’s your choice. It just takes a little effort and guess what? Effort is for free. Thanks again for your time. Make it a great day.
